And technically one of the big pivotal moments in the books (getting revenge on Pekka Rollins), which happens in the last Crows book, happened this season. Technically, the Six of Crows books take place two years after the main trilogy, but the show has been playing fast and loose with the timeline anyway.

We are finally caught up to the Crows books. Image: Netflix What’s next for the Six of Crows characters? Some of these threads, however, are foreshadowed way more in season 2 than others - and some might actually be addressed in a possible Six of Crows spinoff instead. And even if it didn’t, there are two separate sequel series that follow different sets of characters and dive into the ramifications of the Ravkan Civil War. Just kidding! You’re probably not wondering that, because Shadow and Bone season 2 ended with a lot of loose ends that weren’t actually there in the books. It was a lot, so you might be wondering, Man, is there anything left for an upcoming third season? With Ravka saved, she breaks off her engagement with Nikolai and lives a quiet life with Mal.This season of Shadow and Bone didn’t just adapt the next book in the main trilogy - it finished up Alina’s main story, and also pulled in some plotlines from the Crows books, and also from one of the companion short story books. Becoming "ordinary" is the cost of her corrupted ambition. Even though Alina initially sought the amplifiers with good intentions, wielding more than one left her craving power for power's sake. In their final confrontation, using three amplifiers leaves Alina bereft of her powers altogether. In the novels, events play out differently: Alina channels merzost in an attempt to drain the Darkling of his power, and the act almost kills both parties.

Merzost always demands a sacrifice from the practicing Grisha, hence why it's considered a dangerous abomination of the Small Science.

The change is likely because the Summoner uses merzost, the same forbidden magic the Darkling channeled to create the Fold, to resurrect Mal from the dead. The living saint now calls shadows, just like the deceased Darkling. Episode 8 also leaves audiences with the stunner of the century, that Alina is a Sun Summoner no more.
